Extended Bio
Laurie Freitag is a Los Angeles–based photographer whose work moves between documentary photography and photographic abstraction. Her images explore childhood, memory, nature, and the unexpected possibilities found in familiar places.
Raised in New York, Freitag brought a lifelong interest in observation to her work as a nanny in Los Angeles. Over sixteen years caring for children, she witnessed the small, fleeting moments that shape early life. That experience became the foundation for The Lost Years Before Memory Begins, a photographic series exploring childhood amnesia and the years we cannot consciously remember.
Her practice also includes Lunar Sanctuaries, a series combining botanical imagery and lunar landscapes, and Altered Perspective, in which she stretches, shifts, and reshapes a single photograph to create color abstractions.
Freitag’s work has been recognized by the Julia Margaret Cameron Award and Photolucida’s Critical Mass Top 200, and featured in The Phoblographer’s “10 Women Photographers to Follow.”
In 2024, 24 images from The Lost Years were projected on an 80-foot building for Projecting L.A. Her work was also included in the Big Picture public art installation in Montparnasse, Paris, in 2026.
Her photographs are represented by Duncan Miller Gallery and Susan Spiritus Gallery. She is also the founder and director of L.A. Photo Curator.
